THE PREDICTION
Defending champion Frances Tiafoe grabbed his most convincing win in some time on Friday, ousting Los Cabos champion Jordan Thompson in tight straight sets. The 26-year-old has struggled for form and, seemingly, confidence since an agonising defeat to Ben Shelton in the quarter-finals of the US Open last summer and the possibility of a rematch in the final here on Sunday is likely a big extra motivation. 22-year-old Luciano Darderi should not be underestimated, though, as the Italian proved with a shock run to the Cordoba Open title back in February. Darderi will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 63rd after blasting past Marcos Giron on Friday and his three-set epic over Francisco Cerundolo, second seed this week in Houston, suggests he is the favourite in this first encounter with Tiafoe in these conditions. Former number 10 Tiafoe could finally be turning a corner but despite home advantage in Houston back Darderi to earn at least a set as the more comfortable clay-courter with nothing to lose.
