THE LOWDOWN
France have won the Davis Cup Finals on 10 occasions to draw with Great Britain behind the US and Australia as the nation with the third most titles. Most recently winning in 2017 where Lucas Pouille and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga were part of a shock team that just edged out Belgium in a doubles decider. Former world number seven Richard Gasquet played alongside Pierre-Hugues Herbert that day and the veteran could prove the difference here in a team strong in depth but lacking any players inside the top 40. World number 47 Adrian Mannarino recently won the Winston-Salem Open but he is likely to be the second option to world number 53 Benjamin Bonzi, who has enjoyed a breakthrough season this year with more consistent form.
Germany have won three Davis Cup Finals titles, twice as West Germany and most recently as a unified nation in 1993. The lack of Alexander Zverev leaves them light at first option this week but world number 52 Oscar Otte could be a serious secret weapon after performing handsomely at German tournaments this season, reaching the semi-finals in Munich, Stuttgart and Halle on his way to setting a career-high ATP world ranking of 36th this summer. A home tie in Hamburg should give the Germans a real boost and second option Jan-Lennard Struff is an excellent player on clay well capable of reaching higher heights than his current ranking at 132nd suggests. Germany’s third option Yannick Hanfmann is also at his best on the clay, whilst their doubles partnership of Tim Puetz and Kevin Krawietz is one of the stronger and more experienced in the entire competition.
THE PREDICTION
This should be an electrifying tie at the Davis Cup Finals between two well-matched sides capable of snatching victory. With no out-and-out superstars in their ranks this tie should come down to individual form, currently favouring France, and home advantage that levels things out for Germany. Expect a big week from Oscar Otte here after the 29-year-old lost to two out of three eventual champions in the semi-finals of German tournaments this season, and then world number one Daniil Medvedev in the other. France look a well-balanced team but Hamburg should help pull the Germans over the line here.
