THE LOWDOWN

France’s 36-year-old veteran Richard Gasquet got their crucial clash with Australia underway well with an excellent straight-sets result over Jason Kubler but that was the last of their good news. First option Benjamin Bonzi was able to take a set from Alex de Minaur before losing in three and then Nicolas Mahut and Arthur Rinderknech struggled to break down the Aussie’s Wimbledon champions in Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell.

Belgium have struggled their way through two tough draws in Group C, first playing group favourites Australia before facing home nation Germany in Hamburg. Zizou Bergs put in a good shift but ultimately lost to clay-court aficionado Jan-Lennard Struff in conditions that favoured the German but David Goffin came back from a set down to valiantly level the tie 1-1 against Oscar Otte. The Belgians took the first set in the crucial doubles decider but Germany’s top pairing of Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz eventually found their rhythm to knock Belgium out of the Davis Cup.

THE PREDICTION

This will likely be a fairly drab dead rubber match on Saturday between two proud Davis Cup nations bowing out earlier than they should. With only pride to play for, there could be plenty of fluctuations in team selection – particularly in the second option openers – that makes predicting a solid score fairly tricky. Belgium’s line-up should stay the same but France may roll out anyone from Richard Gasquet, Arthur Rinderknech and Adrian Mannarino to play Zizou Bergs. Belgium have the more in-form first option player in Goffin, this week specifically, and he should have enough experience on clay to beat Benjamin Bonzi. Assuming that the tie goes 1-1 into the doubles, back France to edge the win on the shoulders of the experienced doubles veteran Nicolas Mahut.
