THE LOWDOWN

France just lost out in their entertaining opening tie with Group C host nation Germany in Hamburg, losing in three sets in the deciding doubles. Benjamin Bonzi took Jan-Lennard Struff close in a three-set defeat in the second option opener but the German always looked the more comfortable on clay and a partisan atmosphere in Hamburg proved the difference in the doubles too. Adrian Mannarino provided the steady hand on the tiller, beating Oscar Otte in straight sets to force the decider.

Australia beat Belgium 3-0 on Tuesday, with Jason Kubler impressing in a three-set victory over Zizou Bergs. World number 22 Alex de Minaur conceded just two games to David Goffin in the first option clash and that set the tone for a comprehensive victory in the doubles, with Wimbledon champions Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell proving themselves one of the best duos at the Davis Cup Finals.

THE PREDICTION

Australia’s first option Alex de Minaur only recently beat France’s Adrian Mannarino in the quarter-finals of the Atlanta Open on his way to a sixth ATP title, although Mannarino beat the Aussie in straight sets at ‘s-Hertogenbosch in June. De Minaur leads their head-to-head 2-1 overall to suggest he has the edge in this encounter, that and his often excellent performances on the international stage, to leave much of this tie up to a potential opener between Jason Kubler and Benjamin Bonzi. World number 97 Kubler should be ranked a lot higher after reaching the round of 16 at Wimbledon back in July but his form has admittedly tailed off a little since leaving the natural surfaces of grass and clay this summer. Clay should suit the Aussie here in Hamburg against world number 53 Bonzi, who would far prefer this tie to be played in one of the other three host cities this week. Fine intricacies like this make all the difference at this stage of the Davis Cup Finals and whilst clay favours the Aussies in the singles it could go against them in the doubles, with 40-year-old Nicolas Mahut a two-time Roland-Garros champion in Men’s Doubles. Back Australia to win the tie but consider risking a 2-1 pick in their favour here.
