24-year-old McCartney Kessler received a wildcard to make her Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open and she will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 206th for doing so. The American enjoyed some strong work in the ITF circuit last season and she stands a reasonable chance at a debut victory here on Monday against former number 39 Fiona Ferro, who has lost each of her last four major matches. The current world number 153 qualified well this week to build on some decent results at the Canberra Challenger last week but picking a winner from two unlikely second-rounders looks a tough challenge.
