THE PREDICTION

World number 15 Felix Auger-Aliassime is enduring a small crisis on tour this season and this looks a serious candidate for an early upset at the US Open. The 23-year-old reached the semi-finals here two years ago before defeat to eventual champion Daniil Medvedev and he won four ATP titles in a transformative season last year but 2023 has seen him struggle with form-affecting injuries for the first time in his professional career. 28-year-old Mackenzie McDonald is a lover of the five-set format and the American will be well-backed by a near partisan atmosphere as he comes into New York at a career-high ATP world ranking of 39th following his recent run to the quarter-final of the Canada Masters. McDonald has beaten the likes of Aslan Karatsev, Andrey Rublev, Milos Raonic and Holger Rune in the past two weeks to look readier than he ever has to make a proper dent at Flushing Meadows. Auger-Aliassime has room to play himself into form over five sets here but take McDonald to earn at least two sets to leave the victor up to chance. Five sets are a distinct possibility here.
