THE PREDICTION

This will be a fascinating first meeting between two of the tour’s most in-form players right now. World number nine Felix Auger-Aliassime beat man of the moment Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets on Saturday, the second time beating the Spaniard since he won the US Open last month, to make a huge statement in reaching a third-successive final. The Canadian is riding a 12-match winning streak into the Swiss Indoors final having won his second and third ATP titles back-to-back at the Firenze Open and European Open but this new-and-improved version of Holger Rune could well be the toughest foe he has yet faced this month. 19-year-old Rune will break the top 20 on tour for a first time after making his third tour final on indoor hardcourts this season with an excellent straight-sets victory over Roberto Bautista Agut. The Dane has made back-to-back finals on tour for the first time after claiming his second ATP title at the Stockholm Open with victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas and he is yet to drop a set this week in the kind of momentum that Auger-Aliassime also brings to the final.

This could be a proper thriller between Auger-Aliassime’s super-controlled aggression and Rune’s more showreel-style shot-making but the Canadian has to be favoured in their first meeting after making short work of the world number one on Saturday. Take Auger-Aliassime to make it three titles on the spin, although the truly sensible option would be taking at least a set for the Canadian and leaving the victor up to chance.
