Felix Auger-Aliassime got his title defence off to a strong start as he eased to victory over Sebastian Baez, beating the Argentine 7-5 6-1 on Wednesday. There is no doubting the Canadian’s belief in this tournament and if his opening match is anything to go by, he could well make it three titles in a row in Basel.
He meets Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard who blasted his way past James Duckworth 7-6 6-3 on Monday. He smashed 21 aces in the two sets and looked mightily impressive as Duckworth had no answer to his monster serve.
Auger-Aliassime should have the return game and all-round athleticism to handle Mpetshi Perricard here. The big Frenchman can overpower anybody on his day but given Auger-Aliassime’s form in Basel, it is hard to see it ending here. Back the Canadian to extend his phenomenal run in this tournament and reach the quarter-finals.
