THE PREDICTION

This will be a fascinating third encounter between world number 40 Dusan Lajovic and number nine Felix Auger-Aliassime as the Serb leads 2-0 in their head-to-head having not yet dropped even a set to the Canadian. 32-year-old Lajovic made it six wins on the spin on Thursday when he beat Jason Kubler in straight sets to back up a remarkable campaign at the Banja Luka Open last week which saw him stun world number one Novak Djokovic, Miomir Kecmanovic and in-form Andrey Rublev in the final. This match is particularly intriguing as for the first time it feels like Lajovic is the favourite to come through against Auger-Aliassime, who despite a strong run at Roland-Garros last season has yet to impress consistently on clay. The 22-year-old also comes in cold on the surface with his last match a shock defeat to Francisco Cerundolo at the Miami Open a month ago, although the high-altitude in Madrid will add an extra few MPHs to his fierce groundstrokes.

All the evidence points towards Lajovic claiming another brilliant win here but the Serb is a hard player to back with confidence. Take Lajovic to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance but it is probably wise to leave this one out of an accumulator.
