THE PREDICTION

Former world number six Felix Auger-Aliassime’s concerning depreciation in form started here in Miami last season, where he laboured to victory over Thiago Monteiro before a straight-sets exit to Francisco Cerundolo. The 23-year-old managed to defend his Swiss Indoors title late last season to save 2023 from being a total write-off – by his high standards of course – but a consummate exit to Carlos Alcaraz in the third round of Indian Wells last time out shows how far away he is still from a consistent former glory on hardcourts.

24-year-old Adam Walton will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 136th after twice coming back from a set down, including over the aforementioned Monteiro, in qualifying to make his Masters debut. The Aussie has enjoyed some strong work on the Challenger circuit this season so far but even an out-of-sorts Auger-Aliassime should be able to avoid an upset in this first encounter. Walton has nothing to lose, though, and some clear momentum from two fightbacks in qualifying to boost his confidence in this biggest match of his life. Consider taking Walton to earn at least a set here, as a one-off, or otherwise leave the match alone altogether.

TIP: ADAM WALTON TO WIN A SET
