THE LOWDOWN
FACUNDO BAGNIS
World number 71 Facundo Bagnis claimed one of the best wins of his career at the start of the season with a three-set victory over Andy Murray in Melbourne last week. The 31-year-old went on to take the first set against Grigor Dimitrov before the Bulgarian fought back to win but his 2022 performances so far are in keeping with a surprise run to the third round of the US Open last year before losing to Botic van de Zandschulp. Bagnis reached his first ATP tour final last season but lost to his next opponent here in three sets.
CRISTIAN GARIN
25-year-old Cristian Garin set a career-high ATP world ranking of 17th last September in a season that saw him win a fifth ATP title and reach the round of 16 at a Grand Slam for the first time, twice, at Roland-Garros and then Wimbledon. The Chilean lost two of his three singles matches at the ATP Cup at the start of 2022 to Roberto Bautista Agut and Casper Ruud in two fairly poor performances.
THE PREDICTION
As aforementioned, Cristian Garin was the man to end Facundo Bagnis’ superb run at the Santiago Open last season in a tight three-set encounter on their favoured clay surface. However, it could be argued that the Argentine has started the 2022 season in much the better form and Garin has occasionally been found wanting on a hardcourt early in the season with a fairly predictable game. Over five sets the shrewd move may be to take Bagnis to snatch at least one here with Garin not fully up to speed.
