THE PREDICTION

25-year-old Ugo Humbert faces a huge opportunity to finish his journey back from the wilderness with a fourth ATP title this season, which would be his first since claiming the European Open in late 2021. The Frenchman will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 22nd after making the Metz semi-finals but that depends on what compatriot Adrian Mannarino can do in Sofia today. Former world number nine Fabio Fognini is a hugely unlikely semi-final opponent here after the 36-year-old blew off the cobwebs and then some this week. Fognini has barely featured on tour this season but he conceded just three games to defending Moselle Open champion Lorenzo Sonego on Thursday to back-up a huge result over Alexander Bublik – last season’s runner-up. Beating both former finalists makes the Italian a clear threat here but Humbert’s unfussy yet ruthless ball-striking should see him through. The Frenchman beat Fognini in straight sets on the Italian’s favoured clay three years ago and Fognini is not getting any younger. Back Humbert to win, probably in straight sets.

BETTING TIP: UGO HUMBERT TO WIN 2-0.
