THE PREDICTION
This promises to be another spicy edition to a storied rivalry between former world number nine Fabio Fognini and current world number eight Andrey Rublev in their 11th meeting on tour. The pair share a 5-5 head-to-head record after Rublev levelled things in the semi-finals of the Serbia Open earlier this season, where he went on to win the 11th ATP title of his career, and he has won each of their last four encounters stretching back to the ATP Cup finals in 2021. World number 61 Fognini came through to the Cincinnati main draw as a lucky loser but then played well to oust in-form Albert Ramos-Vinolas in straight sets. The Italian has struggled to impose himself on tour but he has found plenty of success in the doubles alongside Simone Bolelli. Rublev finished runner-up to Alexander Zverev here last season and he could do with another deep run ahead of the US Open after a difficult few weeks. Given his recent record over Fognini, Rublev can be backed to win outright here. It would not be a surprise to see three sets and some fireworks if Fognini plays well.
