THE LOWDOWN

Former world number two Petra Kvitova could be gearing up for a tilt at the US Open title after finishing runner-up to Caroline Garcia at the Cincinnati Open last Sunday. The Czech has suffered a few troubling seasons on tour in recent years but she came into form at the Eastbourne International back in June to lift a 29th WTA title, two of which came at Wimbledon in 2011 and 2014. 32-year-old Kvitova reached the Australian Open final in 2019, losing to Naomi Osaka, but she has never made it past the quarter-finals in New York.

THE PREDICTION

This could be a tricky opener for Kvitova if she does not hit the ground running as she takes on 18-year-old Erika Andreeva, who qualified the hard way to make her Grand Slam debut here in New York. The Russian was runner-up in the Girls’ Singles at Roland-Garros last year and she recently claimed a first tour-level win, also on clay, at the Lausanne Open. Kvitova should have more than enough to win in straight sets here but an outright pick could be the wise move inside an accumulator.
