THE LOWDOWN

World number seven Coco Gauff made it six wins in a row with a controlled display over Katerina Siniakova on Monday, conceding just five games to the Czech in an impressive opener after winning her third title in Auckland last week. The 18-year-old reached her first Grand Slam final last season at Roland-Garros before finishing runner-up to world number one Iga Swiatek and she is targeting her first major title in 2023. Gauff set a career-high WTA world ranking of fourth last season and qualified for both the singles and doubles for the first time at the WTA Finals.

Former world number 10 Emma Raducanu pulled Tamara Korpatsch all over the court on Monday, also conceding just five games to her opponent. More importantly, the 20-year-old appeared to be untroubled by her most recent injury, a rolled ankle suffered in Auckland last week. Raducanu famously won the US Open in 2021 as a qualifier on her debut in New York and last season’s first round exit in New York remains her only opening round defeat at a major in now seven appearances.

THE PREDICTION

This is the first of likely many battles between future top 10 rivals Coco Gauff and Emma Raducanu and it will no doubt be the hottest ticket in Melbourne on Wednesday. Both players burst onto the scene at Wimbledon as unknown youngsters, with Gauff upsetting idol Venus Williams in the first round in 2019 on her way to the round of 16 and Raducanu making the same stage as a wildcard in 2021, and both have already reached a Grand Slam final – with Raducanu ahead in that category. If the Brit is fully fit she has a genuine chance at a wild upset here over Gauff as one of the better dismantlers of an opponent’s game we have seen for some time. Gauff’s glaring weakness is her forehand but the teenager makes up for that in spades with an incredible serve, backhand and forward movement – the latter of which has vastly improved over the last 12 months with her performance in Women’s Doubles. Ultimately, Gauff should be able to navigate a way through this blockbuster clash but if Raducanu’s body holds up it should come tighter than many expect. Back Gauff to win outright in a match likelier to see three sets than two.
