THE LOWDOWN
EMIL RUUSUVUORI
World number 61 Emil Ruusuvuori got doubly fortunate this week in Rome after losing his second qualifier to Sebastian Baez, with a bye to the second round as a lucky loser here. The 23-year-old has impressed on clay for really the first time over the last month, with a round of 16 reached at the Barcelona Open before a solid run to the quarter-finals at the Munich Open.
CRISTIAN GARIN
World number 45 Cristian Garin has been hared to pin down so far this clay swing in what has ultimately been a poor season so far by his standards. The 25-year-old reached the semi-finals of the Hosuton Open on his favoured surface last month but he has since failed to win back-to-back matches at four tournaments. Garin made short work of Italian wildcard Francesco Passaro in straight sets on Sunday.
THE PREDICTION
There is more than a hint of an upset here with Cristian Garin struggling to string back-to-back wins together essentially all season long and lucky loser Emil Ruusuvuori coming in with nothing to lose as a lucky loser. The Finn has been impressive on a surface that he has looked uncomfortable on in the past and it would not be a surprise to see him overcome the Chilean in this first meeting between the two. The obvious pick is backing Garin as the clay specialist to win at least a set but taking Ruusuvuori to win at least one could be the shrewd move here.
