World number 29 Elise Mertens struggled in singles tennis for much of last season but she saved it with a last-minute title, on clay, at the Jasmin Open. The 27-year-old former world number 12 has plenty of time to break back inside the top 20 but her form has been remarkably erratic this year, with early exits in Indian Wells and Bogota contrasting with a great run to the round of 16 at the Miami Open. World number 79 Rebecca Marino beat Lin Zhu in straight sets on Tuesday to get an important win in her legs in the unique high altitude conditions in Madrid and that could see her take this first meeting with Mertens all the way. Mertens is an excellent competitor on clay but backing the Belgian to earn at least a set is the suitably cautious move here and to win outright a fair risk.
