THE LOWDOWN
ELISE MERTENS
World number 32 Elise Mertens usually goes under the radar at Grand Slams as one of the more dependable performers on tour and the Belgian has reached the round of 16 for the fifth time in seven majors. The 26-year-old has never made it past this stage of Roland-Garros or Wimbledon hut she is a two-time US Open quarter-finalist and she made the semi-finals at the Australian Open back in 2018. Mertens owns six WTA titles in singles, including two on clay from the Rabat Open and Lugano Open in 2018.
COCO GAUFF
World number 23 Coco Gauff is one win away from matching her best Grand Slam run that she achieved here last season before defeat to the eventual champion Barbora Krejcikova. The 18-year-old is already exceptional across all surfaces but a cleat penchant for clay is hugely promising and she stood up to a serious test of her title credentials in a straight-sets victory over giant-killer Kaia Kanepi on Friday. Gauff is also going well in the Women’s Doubles at Roland-Garros alongside fellow second-weeker Jessica Pegula.
THE PREDICTION
This should be a robust and well-contested battle on court between consummate professional Elise Mertens and the vastly impressive prodigy that is Coco Gauff. The American came back from a set down to beat Mertens at the Eastbourne International last summer on grass and she looks even better on clay this season than her excellent form in 2021. If Mertens has a weakness it is potentially a ceiling against the very top players, of which Gauff is clearly becoming month-on-month. Back the teenager to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors or risk the outright pick.
