World number 39 Elise Mertens was stunned in straight sets by Xinyu Wang at this stage of Indian Wells a fortnight ago but the Belgian should be better for it in Miami. Prior to that the 27-year-old reached the semi-finals of the Monterrey Open before losing in straight sets to eventual runner-up Caroline Garcia and it was not long ago that she won the Jasmin Open late last season, her seventh WTA title. World number 56 Alycia Parks only recently claimed her maiden WTA title at the Lyon Open – and at the hands of Garcia no less – but the 22-year-old has struggled to find that level since. A poor performance at this stage of Indian Wells last time out was her fourth loss in five matches since winning the Lyon title and Mertens should be too wily to let her opponent build any confidence in this first meeting between the two. Back Mertens to win outright inside an accumulator or in straight sets on its own.
