ELINA AVANESYAN Second-successive round of 16 at Roland-Garros

World number 70 Elina Avanesyan stunned Ona Jabeur to reach the round of 16 at Roland-Garros last summer and she emulated that result with a superb comeback over seventh seed Qinwen Zheng on Saturday. The 21-year-old blasted through re first two rounds but beating a quality clay-courter in Zheng, 10-6 in a deciding tiebreak, suggests she is well capable of competing for a place in the top 20 over the coming seasons.

JASMINE PAOLINI Second-successive round of 16 at a Grand Slam

28-year-old Jasmine Paolini set a career-high WTA world ranking of 12th after a surprise, and slightly fortunate, run to the Dubai Masters title in February but a second-successive round of 16 at this level is no fluke. The Italian overcame a resurgent Bianca Andreescu in three sets on Saturday, dropping her first set of a hard-fought campaign so far, but she will be eager to bring the same intensity to this clash after struggling at this stage of the Australian Open in January.

ELINA AVANESYAN VS JASMINE PAOLINI PREDICTION

This first encounter is a huge opportunity for both players to reach the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time. It took eventual champion Karolina Muchova to stop Elina Avanesyan at this stage last summer but the Russian has struggled, largely, to emulate her success in Paris elsewhere – despite upsetting Maria Sakkari in the second round of the Australian Open.

The Russian clearly has big-game mentality but world number 15 Jasmine Paolini plays like every match is a final, scrapping her way to victories by frustrating quality opponents. Avanesyan’s comeback over Qinwen Zheng is the pick of their results so far this campaign so back the Russian to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
