THE PREDICTION
World number 23 Caroline Garcia conceded just one game to Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova on Thursday, seemingly exorcizing some recent demons after failing to carry France through to the Billie Jean King Cup Finals last weekend. The former number four is a fearsome talent across all surfaces at her best but she has struggled to find enough consistent form in recent seasons to match her blistering end to 2022, where she claimed four WTA titles from June through to the prestigious WTA Finals in November. Recent struggled with her shoulder seem to have passed in Rouen to suggest she can roll through this clash with world number 168 Elena-Gabriela Ruse but the Romanian is capable of much better tennis in these conditions than her ranking suggests. A three-set victory over seventh seed Clara Burel is proof that she is comfortable playing the villain of the piece in France and she took Garcia to three sets in their only previous encounter – albeit five years ago at the Nottingham Open. Back Garcia to win outright for caution’s sake.
TIP: CAROLINE GARCIA TO WIN
