THE LOWDOWN
EKATERINA ALEXANDROVA
World number 31 Ekaterina Alexandrova dismissed an out-of-sorts Sloane Stephens for just three games on Tuesday, maintaining her excellent level on clay this swing. The 27-year-old lost in the semi-finals of the Madrid Open to eventual champion Ons Jabeur last week, matching her run at the Charleston Open last month where she also lost in the last four to eventual champion Belinda Bencic.
MARIA SAKKARI
World number four Maria Sakkari beat Madison Keys in three tough sets last week at the Madrid Open but then lost out in the same way to Daria Kasatkina in the second round. The 26-year-old owns just one WTA title from the 2019 Rabat Open but she reached the semi-finals of Roland-Garros and the US Open last season, losing out to the eventual champions of both in Barbora Krejcikova and Emma Raducanu, respectively.
THE PREDICTION
This looks like a proper thriller on Wednesday if both Ekaterina Alexandrova and Maria Sakkari can emulate their recent levels. The Greek leads this head-to-head 2-1 at tour-level after Alexandrova retired from the second set of their most recent match at this season’s St. Petersburg Open and in fact their last two matches have been settled by retirement after Sakkari was injured in the semi-finals of last year’s Kremlin Cup. A first meeting on clay should suit Sakkari in terms of power but Alexandrova is more than happy to trade blows from the baseline and three sets seems likely here. For that reason, the suitably cautious option is backing Sakkari to win at least a set but you could take the risk on this seeing a decider.
