THE PREDICTION

World number 21 Ekaterina Alexandrova takes on number 22 Liudmila Samsonova here in what should be a fierce hitting contest. 24-year-old Samsonova is the defending champion in Tokyo after beating Qinwen Zheng to the title here last season and she started like it on Monday, conceding just two games to Tatjana Maria to look hungry for a deep run. 28-year-old Alexandrova came back from a set down to oust Anna Kalinskaya in the tougher fixture and she was victorious in her only previous encounter with Samsonova at the Berlin Open this summer, where Samsonova won her maiden WTA title in 2021, in straight sets. This second clash should better suit Samsonova’s game but three sets seem likelier than two between two players who have reached finals on tour recently, both finishing runner-up. Back Samsonova to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
