THE LOWDOWN

EKATERINA ALEXANDROVA

World number 45 Ekaterina Alexandrova came back from a set down to beat Marie Bouzkova on Monday in a vastly entertaining round of 16 clash. The 27-year-old handed Bouzkova a second-set bagel on her way to the quarter-finals in form that saw her blast through Jelena Ostapenko in round one and reach the semi-finals of the Charleston Open last month before a defeat to eventual champion Belinda Bencic.

AMANDA ANISIMOVA

World number 33 Amanda Anisimova beat former world number one Victoria Azarenka in straight sets for a seriously impressive result after turning around a second-set meltdown. The 20-year-old has been rediscovering her incredible form that saw her burst onto the world stage back in 2019 with a run to the Roland-Garros semi-finals on clay, soon after winning her first WTA title at the Bogota Open. Anisimova won her second title at the start of the season in Melbourne.

THE PREDICTION

Anisimova was the winner of her only previous meeting with Alexandrova in a straight-sets result at the Qatar Open on a hardcourt in 2020. The American is even better on clay, though, and she looks the reasonable favourite to battle through here but three sets seems likely against the in-form Russian. Anisimova will be popular with the Madrid support and with Azarenka and Aryna Sabalenka in her wake she looks a serious title contender this week. Take the 20-year-old to reach a first Masters semi-final with an outright win.
