THE LOWDOWN

DUSAN LAJOVIC

31-year-old Dusan Lajovic qualified well this week with solid wins on clay over Adrian Mannarino and Roberto Carballes Baena and that looks to have settled him into the tournament after a three-set victory over Borna Coric. World number 77 Lajovic has been struggling to impose himself on tournaments for some time on tour but he remains a very tricky player on clay at his best, with his only ATP title coming on the surface at the Umag Open in 2019.

CASPER RUUD

Current world number seven Casper Ruud could be overtaken by Carlos Alcaraz this week if he does not at least match the Spaniard’s progress in Madrid. The 23-year-old finished runner-up to Alcaraz at the Miami Open last month for a first Masters final which comes as a surprise after his prowess on clay, on which he owns six ATP titles after claiming this season’s Buenos Aires Open. Ruud was shocked in the quarter-finals of the Munich Open last week by Botic van de Zandschulp, losing from a set up.

THE PREDICTION

Ruud has beaten Lajovic in all three of their previous meetings on tour, each in straight sets, including at this season’s ATP Cup whilst representing Norway. The 23-year-old has been found out a few times of late but he is still well inside the top 10 players on tour on clay and he will be confident of overcoming Lajovic, despite the Serb’s prowess on this surface. Take Ruud to win outright or in straight sets for a reasonable risk.
