27-year-old Katie Boulter will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 43rd after an excellent comeback from a set down to beat second seed Beatriz Haddad-Maia on Thursday. The Brit won her maiden title on grass at the Nottingham Open last summer but she is arguably better-suited to hardcourt conditions like these in San Diego and she looks set for a career-best year in 2024. World number 28 Donna Vekic is a really tough opponent to have to face for the first time but her three-set win over Marina Stakusic on Thursday suggests there is hope for Boulter. Vekic, also 27, stunned Aryna Sabalenka at the Dubai Masters last week but she has not entirely convinced since, although she has always been capable of fits and starts around a fierce game with a very high ceiling. The suitably cautious pick, given Boulter’s week so far, is backing Vekic to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
