THE PREDICTION

World number five Aryna Sabalenka came back from a set down to oust Sloane Stephens on Thursday. The 24-year-old has reached the semi-finals in each of her last two tournaments at the Cincinnati Masters and US Open for a significant return to the kind of level she is capable of after what has been a fairly turgid 12 months on tour. This suddenly looks a tough fixture, though, against former world number 19 Donna Vekic as the Croat has burst into form in San Diego. The 26-year-old has endured a tough few seasons on tour but back-to-back straight-set victories over Maria Sakkari and Karolina Pliskova is she has always been capable of when on song. Vekic leads Sabalenka 2-1 in their head-to-head record at tour-level after wining their most recent meeting in three sets at the Tokyo Olympic Games last summer. Sabalenka has taken at least a set in each of their three tour-level meetings to suggest that route is the most sensible one to follow here but the Belarussian should be able to eventually overpower Vekic here.
