THE PREDICTION
This promises to be another thrilling encounter between world number 25 Frances Tiafoe and number 52 Dominik Koepfer, with Tiafoe aiming to avenge a three-set upset by the German at the Mexican Open in February. Former number 10 Tiafoe has been desperately scrabbling for anything like his best level practically ever since losing out to Ben Shelton in the quarter-finals of the US Open last summer and it will have doubly hurt to lose his Houston Open title to Shelton in the final this time last month. Wins over Jordan Thompson and Luciano Darderi were encouraging but a first round exit to Federico Coria at the Cagliari Challenger last week is a concern coming into Rome.
30-year-old Koepfer beat Andrea Vavassori in straight sets on Thursday to bring some momentum into this clash and he will be well aware of his opponent’s low confidence. The German is probably the more comfortable in typical clay conditions like Rome’s but Tiafoe is an all-court threat, with each of his three ATP titles coming on a different surface. Back Koepfer to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
TIP: DOMINIK KOEPFER TO WIN A SET
