THE PREDICTION
21-year-old Dominic Stricker will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 102nd after stunning world number seven Stefanos Tsitsipas in five thrilling sets on Wednesday. The Swiss qualified well last week to make his US Open debut and he takes some serious momentum into this wide open third round encounter with Benjamin Bonzi after also upsetting in-form Alexei Popyrin in four sets on Monday. World number 108 Bonzi overcame an out-of-sorts Christopher Eubanks on Wednesday to back-up a strong four-set comeback over Quentin Halys in the first round. The 27-year-old entered New York on a protected ranking after an injury-hampered summer saw him fall away from a career-high of 42nd set in February after reaching his second final in as many months in 2023. This is a life-changing opportunity for both players to make the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time but Stricker’s win over Tsitsipas should garner him the lion’s share of the support here to add an extra edge. This match is a reasonable candidate for five sets and so taking both players to earn at least one could be the shrewd way out of picking a very tough result.
