THE PREDICTION
Former world number eight Diego Schwartzman came into the Shanghai Masters ranked 130th after enduring the worst 12 months of his career but a shock three-set victory over Jiri Lehecka on Sunday saw him take back-to-back wins for only the second time this season. The 31-year-old is a popular player missing from the top end of the tour and his underdog status in this match may see him favoured by the crowd but this looks a step too far against current number eight Taylor Fritz. 25-year-old Fritz needed three sets to overcome Yosuke Watanuki on Saturday but the American should be better for an early scare as he comes into Shanghai after a much-needed break following his US Open exit. A victory over Andrey Rublev at the Laver Cup late last month is proof of the form he can find with the pressure off but three sets seem likelier than two here given their respective results so far. Schwartzman beat Fritz to win the Los Cabos Open title in their last match back in 2019, leading the American 2-1 in their head-to-head, but back Fritz to level things with an outright win here.
