THE LOWDOWN
DIEGO SCHWARTZMAN
World number 14 Diego Schwartzman came back well from a set down to Emil Ruusuvuori on Sunday in his first match since a sore straight-sets defeat to Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals of the Rio Open. The 29-year-old should have more than his current total of four ATP titles, the last of which came at the Buenos Aires Open last season, but his crowning achievement to date is qualifying for the ATP Finals in 2020 after reaching the semi-finals of Roland-Garros.
JOHN ISNER
World number 23 John Isner overcame a fellow American veteran of the sport, Sam Querrey, via two tiebreaks on Sunday. The 36-year-old is also going well in the Men’s Doubles alongside Jack Sock, with victories over the top seeds Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic backed up with an excellent performance against recent Australian Open champions Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis. 14 of Isner’s 16 total ATP titles have come on US soil, including his only Masters title to date from the 2018 Miami Open.
THE PREDICTION
This match-up should be fascinating between the incredible court coverage by 5’7” Diego Schwartzman and the big-serving, all-court wingspan of 6’10” John Isner. The American is clearly enjoying himself at Indian Wells and he will drum up a big crowd here but Schwartzman is a popular player on tour and well likely to pull some of the crowd to his cause too. This could look something of a mis-match at times but their only previous meeting was a huge three-set clash at the Paris Masters back in 2017 that Isner eventually scraped through and this could go as close again. Take Isner to win at least a set here as the just-about likelier of two very capable winners. You could add at least a tiebreak in this one with nine of Isner’s 11 matches this season seeing at least one.
