THE PREDICTION

This should be a fun first encounter between former world number eight Diego Schwartzman and current number eight Holger Rune. 19-year-old Rune ended last season as one of the form players on tour with an incredible comeback victory over Novak Djokovic in the Paris Masters final to lift his first title at ATP 1000 level but he has struggled to rediscover that ruthlessness so far this year. A straight-sets victory over Marton Fucsovics on Friday is a solid start by anyone’s standards but this looks a tricky test against Schwartzman as the Argentine comes in with nothing to lose. In stark contrast to Rune, Schwartzman ended last season in some of the worst form of his career and he has been concerningly poor so far in 2023. A straight-sets win over Yibing Wu on Friday is a step in the right direction but Schwartzman has failed to win back-to-back matches on tour since making the third round of the US Open last summer. Back Rune to win outright here.
