THE LOWDOWN

DIEGO SCHWARTZMAN

World number 15 Diego Schwartzman overcame a tough challenge by Benoit Paire on Monday, beating the unpredictable Frenchman in three sets. The 29-year-old is one of the best players on clay on tour with some excellent form coming into the Madrid Open from a run to the quarter-finals of Monte-Carlo Open and the semi-finals of the Barcelona Open. Schwartzman finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic at the Italian Open in 2016, beating Rafael Nadal en-route.

GRIGOR DIMITROV

World number 20 Grigor Dimitrov beat Maxime Cressy in straight sets on Monday to avenge a poor loss to the American at the beginning of what has been another erratic season. The former world number three reached the semi-finals of the Monte-Carlo Open last month with excellent results over Casper Ruud and Hubert Hurkacz but he has struggled to replicate his form from tournament-to-tournament for a number of years now. Dimitrov won his only Masters title at the Cincinnati Open in 2017, with his ATP Finals triumph that season the most recent of eight career titles.

THE PREDICTION

This match looks like needing a decider to split Diego Schwartzman and Grigor Dimitrov with both players taking some serious form on clay into this likely thriller. Argentina’s Schwartzman beat Dimitrov in three sets to win the 2016 Istanbul Open in their only clay meeting but the Bulgarian won the following two matches to lead their head-to-head record 2-1. Dimitrov can beat anyone on his day and including any of his matches in accumulators is always a risk but backing battling Diego Schwartzman to win at least a set here is the sensible move to leave the winner up to chance.
