THE PREDICTION
This should be a fascinating and most likely thrilling battle on Friday between two out-of-form players in world number four Casper Ruud and number 38, formerly eight, Diego Schwartzman. 24-year-old Ruud finished runner-up at two Grand Slams last season and ended the year coming second to Novak Djokovic at the ATP Finals but he has won just three of his seven matches so far in 2023, losing most recently to Taro Daniel in three sets at the Mexican Open last week. 30-year-old Schwartzman took an even poorer 1-6 record into the first round here but a comfortable victory over fellow Argentine Federico Coria makes this very interesting – particularly as he will likely garner the lion’s share of the support as a very popular player in these parts. The pair have met on eight previous occasions with Schwartzman leading their head-to-head record 5-3, although Ruud has won three of their last four encounters. Notably, though, the Argentine has won all four of their matches on a hardcourt, including here at Indian Wells two years ago. Back Schwartzman to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
