THE PREDICTION
World number 15 Diego Schwartzman is at his element on the clay but the Madrid Open’s high altitude levels out his effectivity against hard-hitting opponents. The 29-year-old lost in the quarter-finals of the Monte-Carlo Open last month in three sets to eventual champion Stefanos Tsitsipas and he made the semi-finals of the Barcelona Open a week later via a brilliant comeback victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime. World number 62 Benoit Paire has come through two tough qualifying matches to make the main draw in Madrid but the Frenchman is riding a nine-match losing streak from the third round of the Australian Open back in January. Schwartzman has the game to frustrate Paire and the Frenchman’s short fuse is likely to catch at some point over what will probably be a straight-sets defeat. Paire is well capable of producing something extraordinary out of the blue but backing Schwartzman to win in straight sets is a reasonable risk. The Argentine leads Paire 3-1 in their head-to-head record having won each of their last three meetings.
