THE PREDICTION
World number 16 Denis Shapovalov took the first set of Sunday’s Vienna Open final before Daniil Medvedev fought back to lift the trophy. After also recently losing the Korea Open to Yoshihito Nishioka the Canadian will be concerned with his poor finals record, having lost each of his last five finals since winning his debut at the 2019 Stockholm Open. Shapovalov finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic here in 2019, his second tour final, to suggest his recent strong form could see a deep run in Paris this week but it remains to be seen how one of the most unpredictable players on tour will start after more heartbreak. World number 30 Francisco Cerundolo has enjoyed an excellent breakthrough season on tour, claiming his maiden ATP title on clay at the Bastad Open in July, but the Argentine has lost nine of his last 12 matches since transitioning back to hardcourts. This is still a tricky opener for Shapovalov but the Canadian should be able to come through, so back him as the outright winner here or take at least a set inside an accumulator.
