Qatar Open top seed Denis Shapovalov handed Alex Molcan a second-set bagel in an assured opening performance on Wednesday. The 22-year-old was shocked in the first round of his previous tournament in Rotterdam but he played well before that in a great run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open where he lost to eventual champion Rafael Nadal in five thrilling sets. Shapovalov faced world number 61 Arthur Rinderknech in the quarter-finals of last season’s Stockholm Open in November where the Frenchman took the first set before falling in three. 26-year-old Rinderknech has twice come back from two sets down to win this week against Jiri Vesely and Alexander Bublik but he is unlikely to have as many opportunities against Shapovalov.
