THE PREDICTION

World number 23 Victoria Azarenka avoided a potential early exit with style on Monday, conceding just two games to Robin Montgomery to look a real threat this week in Guadalajara. The severe lack of top 10 players at this poorly scheduled Masters opens the door for someone of former number one Azarenka’s experience to take full advantage here and she can make the round of 16 with ease if she maintains focus. Former world number 21 Dayana Yastremska will move back inside the top 100 on tour after beating Ana Sanchez in straight sets on Sunday but the Ukrainian is far from the player that burst onto the scene in 2019, where she upset Azarenka at the Canada Masters in their first encounter. The 23-year-old may feel a certain extra level of motivation against a Belarussian in this third clash between the two but Azarenka should have too much firepower in these conditions to falter, just as she did when levelling their head-to-head in straight sets in Washington last summer. Back the 34-year-old to win outright for caution’s sake but this should fall in two.
