THE LOWDOWN

DAYANA YASTREMSKA

World number 103 Dayana Yastremska reached her first WTA tour final since the Adelaide International back in 2020 in a three-set defeat to Shuai Zhang at the Lyon Open on Sunday. The former world number 21 barely escaped the Russian invasion of Ukraine the weekend before and she played bravely for something bigger than herself that could see her find more success again this campaign. Yastremska has three WTA titles to her name, including the Strasbourg Open won via a victory over Caroline Garcia in 2019.

CAROLINE GARCIA

World number 66 Caroline Garcia found some rare consistency at the Lyon Open last week before losing to eventual champion Shuai Zhang in the semi-finals. The former world number four has seven WTA titles to her name with her most recent coming at the Nottingham Open on grass in 2019. Garcia won back-to-back Masters titles in China at the Wuhan and Beijing Opens of 2017.

THE PREDICTION

21-year-old Dayana Yastremska played with passion in the face of adversity last week in Lyon and she is sure to bring more of that to the vastly bigger stage in California as war continues in her homeland of Ukraine. It would be a mistake to back her solidly on sentiment alone, though, but considering she leads Caroline Garcia 2-0 on their head-to-head record taking her to win at least a set here looks the sensible move. Garcia found some form in Lyon last week too, making her more dangerous than she usually is as one of the tour’s more unpredictable players.
