THE LOWDOWN

DARIA KASATKINA

World number 20 Daria Kasatkina has conceded just 10 games across three matches at Roland-Garros, most recently taking out Shelby Rogers in impressive straight sets. The 25-year-old is one match from emulating her best Grand Slam showing after she made the quarter-finals both here and in Wimbledon in 2018. Kasatkina won her first WTA title on clay at the Charleston Open in 2017.

CAMILA GIORGI

World number 30 Camila Giorgi came back from a set down to beat Aryna Sabalenka on Saturday, beating the former world number for two in similar fashion to their first meeting at last season’s Eastbourne International. The 30-year-old came into Paris with no form at all but she takes little time winding up once she finds her rhythm and she enjoyed her best season on tour last year with a first Masters title at the Canadian Open.

THE PREDICTION

Camila Giorgi is through to the round of 16 at Roland-Garros for the first time and totally out of the blue, with her last win before this campaign coming in the second round of the Australian Open back in January. The Italian lost to Daria Kasatkina in three sets in their only previous meeting, in the quarter-finals of the Lyon Open back in 2020, and the Russian looks the fair favourite to scramble through here on her current form. Still, beating Sabalenka is a huge achievement and Giorgi is well-known for being almost unplayable for the brief spells in which all of her game is in sync. Back Kasatkina to win at least a set and leave the winner up to chance.
