THE PREDICTION
World number 11 Daria Kasatkina got her Guadalajara Masters campaign underway with a comprehensive straight-sets victory over Lin Zhu on Wednesday. The 25-year-old recently claimed the fifth and sixth WTA titles of her career at the Silicon Valley Classic and Granby Open on outside hardcourts and she has excellent pedigree in these conditions as runner-up at Indian Wells in 2018, with five of her six titles coming on hardcourts. Fellow Russian Anna Kalinskaya provided one of the big upsets this week by beating 10-match unbeaten Barbora Krejcikova in the first round and she backed that up masterfully to oust six-match unbeaten Elise Mertens in three sets on Wednesday. The 23-year-old clearly has no respect for title-winners here and she looks a tough player to stop in this momentum, were it not for drawing her compatriot who holds a very convincing 2-0 head-to-head record over her. In fact, Kasatkina has dropped just three games to Kalinskaya in two tour-level meetings, so backing the seventh seed to win this in straight sets looks a reasonable risk.
