THE PREDICTION
World number four Daniil Medvedev made short work of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Thursday to improve on a slightly choppy round of 16 win over Lorenzo Sonego. The 28-year-old is the top seed and defending champion here in Dubai and he looks to have settled into the draw after an extended break since his exhausting run to the Australian Open final last month. This promises to be a thrilling contest with world number 18 Ugo Humbert, though, as the Frenchman used to be something of a bogey player to the likes of Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas in his previous peak three years ago. Medvedev beat Humbert in three sets in the quarter-finals of the Beijing Open last October but that was his first victory over the Frenchman, who still leads their head-to-head 2-1 with a win on clay in 2020 and a memorable three-set victory at the ATP Cup in 2022. 25-year-old Humbert came back from a set down to beat Hubert Hurkacz, via a 10-8 second set tiebreak, to look the business here in Dubai and he has notably won at least a set in each of his three meetings to offer a suitable alternative to picking the winner here.
