THE PREDICTION

World number four Daniil Medvedev will play his first match since losing to Nick Kyrgios in the round of 16 of the US Open earlier this month, a title that he was defending from 2021. The 26-year-old won the Los Cabos Open last month for his first title of the season and he will be desperate to push for a strong indoor-hardcourt swing as a previous winner of both the Paris Masters and ATP Finals in 2020. Former world number three Stan Wawrinka had to qualify for the Moselle Open this weekend but the momentum may well do the Swiss well as he tries to break back inside the top 100 on tour. The 37-year-old veteran beat Joao Sousa in straight sets on Tuesday but Medvedev in these conditions should be too big a challenge for almost all comers here in Metz. The Russian could start a little sluggishly but it would be a surprise to see him not win in straight sets.
