THE LOWDOWN

World number three Daniil Medvedev put in one of the best, most consistent performances of his life to beat defending US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz in four sets late on Friday. The 27-year-old beat Novak Djokovic in straight sets here two years ago to lift his maiden Grand Slam title and he also finished runner-up to the Serb at the Australian Open in 2021. Medvedev has now reached five major finals after finishing runner-up to Rafael Nadal here in his first four years ago and again, from two sets up, to the Spaniard in that famous Melbourne final last season.

36-year-old Novak Djokovic was set to become world number one on Monday no matter the outcome of the US Open but he can confirm it with style here in his 36th Grand Slam final as he seeks a record-extending 24th title. The Serb beat 20-year-old Ben Shelton in straight sets on Friday to see just two sets dropped en-route to the final – both to his compatriot Laslo Djere in the third round. Djokovic is a three-time former champion here after beating Rafael Nadal in 2011, Roger Federer in 2015 and Juan Martin del Potro in 2018 but he has lost six times at this stage of the US Open – more than at any other Grand Slam – including most recently to Daniil Medvedev two years ago.

THE PREDICTION

It is not the final many predicted, nor wanted, given the recent showdowns between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz but this still looks set to be a thrilling battle on Sunday. Daniil Medvedev once came close to a positive record over Djokovic, climbing up to 5-4 with his famous victory here two years ago, but he snapped a four-match losing streak earlier this year to claim their most recent encounter in straight sets at the Dubai Tennis Championships. The Russian was exemplary against a slightly under par Alcaraz on Friday night but he comes into this rematch with Djokovic a but older and, perhaps crucially, with a lot of extra baggage after losing his last Grand Slam final from two sets up to Rafael Nadal at the Australian Open last season.

Novak Djokovic brings an 11-match winning streak into this encounter with plenty of energy left in the tank after three-successive straight-set victories and his 4-1 record over Medvedev since losing the US Open final two years ago is the most encouraging stat. Both players dislike the heat to level that particular playing field but it remains to be seen whom the crowd favour. The Arthur Ashe crowd will likely pull for whoever looks like needing it most in hope of a five set thriller on Sunday but Djokovic is likely to receive the lion’s share of support after a few sets and he will relish the opportunity after so often playing the villain of any piece.

Sets should go both ways here if Medvedev can bring Friday’s level with him but Djokovic has reached the final without having to find his fifth gear. The Serb was an exhausted shell in the final here two years ago, chasing that elusive calendar slam but with less pressure on his shoulders this time around, and significantly more rest in his legs, take the incoming world number one to match Margaret Court’s overall Grand Slam record with a 24th title.
