DANIIL MEDVEDEV
World number two Daniil Medvedev can regain the top spot in the ATP world rankings by reaching the semi-finals at the Miami Open and he is so far playing as if he will with back-to-back straight-set victories. The Russian won his first Grand Slam title at the US Open last year, beating Djokovic in three sets, and he reached a fourth major final this season at the Australian Open. There, Medvedev finished runner-up in Melbourne for a second-successive season and to Rafael Nadal for a second time after their 2019 US Open clash, both of which fell in five sets.
JENSON BROOKSBY
21-year-old Jenson Brooksby will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of at least 36th after one of the best wins of his blossoming young career in three sets over Roberto Bautista Agut. The American stunned Stefanos Tsitsipas in three sets at Indian Wells earlier this month for a career-best win and he famously took the first set from Novak Djokovic in a four-set defeat at the US Open last September. Brooksby finished runner-up to Reilly Opelka at the Dallas Open last month, his second tour final.
THE PREDICTION
There is more than a little scent of an upset about this first meeting between Daniil Medvedev and Jenson Brooksby, with the young American only recently beating world number five Stefanos Tsitsipas at Indian Wells. Whilst Medvedev is far less shockable than Tsitsipas has been for a few months, he too was stunned by Gael Monfils at Indian Wells to see his brief grip of the world number one spot disappear. Seeking to regain it before a clay swing he has admitted to disliking, this match is key for the Russian. Jenson Brooksby is capable of the upset here and if the conditions are too hot for Medvedev we could see a petulant three-set slog on Tuesday. It would not be wise to include Medvedev to win outright in an otherwise promising accumulator but all things considered he should be able to overcome this plucky young home hopeful.
