THE LOWDOWN
DANIIL MEDVEDEV
World number two Daniil Medvedev overcame a tough test against Jenson Brooksby in the first set of their round of 16 clash in Tuesday before ultimately winning through in two. The 26-year-old will regain the world number one spot with one more win at the Miami Open but the Russian will be targeting the title to add to his total of four Masters trophies. Medvedev’s form evolved after the summer of 2019, since when he has won ATP 1000 events in Cincinnati, Shanghai, Paris and Toronto as well as the 2020 ATP Finals and a first Grand Slam title at last season’s US Open.
HUBERT HURKACZ
Defending champion Hubert Hurkacz put in a solid performance to beat Lloyd Harris in straight sets on Tuesday and the Pole is also going well in the Men’s Doubles alongside John Isner, with the pair playing in the quarter-finals on Wednesday. 25-year-old Hurkacz owns four ATP titles including last season’s Miami Open but his most memorable run remains reaching the semi-finals of Wimbledon last summer via wins over next opponent Daniil Medvedev and Roger Federer.
THE PREDICTION
This should be a thrilling quarter-final if the last three meetings between these two are anything to go by. Hubert Hurkacz took their first meeting in five sets over two days at Wimbledon last season due to poor weather and the Russian has since put a little extra into his two wins over the Pole, both coming in three tight sets, at the Canadian Open and ATP Finals. With all three of their meetings going the distance taking this match to see three sets and leaving the winner up to chance could be a useful way out of picking a winner here. However, Medvedev is playing for the world number one spot here and the chances of him taking this in two just about outweigh this going to three. Hurkacz has won the first set in each of their three meetings and that two could be an interesting one-off but taking the Russian to win outright is the sensible call here.
