THE PREDICTION
World number seven Daniil Medvedev beat Novak Djokovic in straight-sets on Friday, ousting the Serb for the first time since winning his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open in 2021. The 27-year-old is riding a 14-match winning streak after claiming both the Rotterdam Open and Qatar Open last month and he has also gone six matches now without dropping a set. World number six Andrey Rublev beat Alexander Zverev for the first time on Friday and the younger Russian is the defending champion here in Dubai. The 25-year-old struggled to impose himself in February but a run to the quarter-finals at the Australian Open back in January saw a clutch win over Holger Rune in the round of 16 that suggested some of his long-lost self-belief was on the way back.
Notably, Rublev has won each of the last two matches between these two friends and compatriots and most recently at the ATP Finals last November, where an out-of-sorts Medvedev lost all three of his matches. Medvedev leads their head-to-head 4-2, though, and he has won at least a set in all six of their previous matches. That makes backing the elder Russian to win at least a set the obvious, cautious move and taking him to win outright the mild risk given his excellent recent return to form.
