THE LOWDOWN

World number three Daniil Medvedev suffered an early exit to an inspired Grigor Dimitrov at the Paris Masters last week, losing in three sets to the eventual runner-up, but that extra week’s rest could prove useful in Turin. The 27-year-old has won more matches than anyone else this season but he has looked a lot less spritely in the second half of 2023, with his last of five titles claimed this year coming in late May at the Italian Open. Medvedev has lost each of his last three finals on tour: to Novak Djokovic at the US Open and then twice to Jannik Sinner in Beijing and Vienna to suggest that he can make the semi-finals here in Turin before being seriously challenged.

World number five Andrey Rublev reached another three Grand Slam quarter-finals this season to take his tally up to nine last eight finishes at majors. However, his inability as yet to progress any further is symptomatic of his robust, ruthless but slightly one-dimensional game that has seen him often thought of as the ‘best-of-the-rest’ on tour. Winning his first Masters title at Monte-Carlo in April was an encouraging milestone broken for the 26-year-old, and he took Novak Djokovic to three sets before defeat in the Paris Masters semi-finals last week, but there is certainly the sense of a ceiling at this level – with last season’s semi-final exit to Casper Ruud here a huge missed opportunity after wins over Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas in the group stages.

THE PREDICTION

Daniil Medvedev won his ATP Finals title in London’s last final back in 2020 and finished runner-up to bitter rival Alexander Zverev in Turin’s inaugural final a year later but last season’s campaign was one to forget. The 27-year-old looked jaded in losing all three of his matches in three tight sets to Rublev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Novak Djokovic but he brings considerably better form into this edition despite the best of his 2023 coming before June. Medvedev leads his friend and compatriot Rublev 6-2 in their head-to-head record and straight-set wins in the Dubai Tennis Championships final and the US Open this season suggest he can be backed to open Turin with a win.

BETTING TIP: DANIIL MEDVEDEV TO WIN.
