THE LOWDOWN

DANIEL EVANS

World number 24 Dan Evans dismantled an out-of-sorts David Goffin for just seven games on Tuesday before receiving a walkover to the third round after Arthur Rinderknech pulled out of the tournament. The 31-year-old has a 6-1 record for the season so far after winning each of his ATP Cup round robin matches in straight sets, including against world number 14 Denis Shapovalov, and reaching the semi-finals of the Sydney Tennis Classic before losing in three tight sets to eventual champion Aslan Karatsev. Evans reached the round of 16 at the US Open last season, matching his best run here back in 2017.

FELIX AUGER-ALIASSIME

World number nine came through a proper slog against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Thursday, winning three of four tiebreaks in a high-quality encounter. The 21-year-old has already played nine sets at the Australian Open but he has yet to fully develop a killer instinct for putting matches away quickly whilst also reaching the heady heights of the semi-finals at the US Open last September. Auger-Aliassime won the ATP Cup with Canada two weeks ago but he is still yet to win an ATP singles title in his own right with eight runner-up finishes so far on tour.

THE PREDICTION

Dan Evans beat Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets to win his first ATP tour title at the Murray River Open almost a year ago. This second meeting sees the Brit in s similar vein of rich early-season form but world number nine Auger-Aliassime has vastly improved over the last year and he looks the solid favourite to battle through here after an excellent hard-fought victory in the previous round. Evans’ walkover against Arthur Rinderknech may leave him well-rested but it may also take the momentum off a superb few weeks on tour so far. There are likely sets in this for both players but taking FAA to come through outright is the sensible pick and the Canadian to win with both players to take a set the reasonable risk.
