THE PREDICTION

World number 62 Nuno Borges is creating a real buzz around tennis in his native Portugal and he used that energy well on Thursday, stunning third seed Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets to improve on his choppy opener over Lucas Pouille. The 26-year-old broke inside the top 50 after his remarkable run to the round of 16 at the Australian Open in January, where he upset Grigor Dimitrov before falling afoul of a resolute Daniil Medvedev, but it bodes well for future success that he has taken well to the clay.

Former world number 17 Cristian Garin used to be a serious threat around this time of year but the Chilean’s level has plummeted over the past three or so seasons. The 27-year-old came back from a set down to upset fifth seed Arthur Fils on Thursday to make a tour-level quarter-final for the first time in almost 12 months but Borges should be able to feed off the Estoril crowd once again to just edge this first encounter. Take that option or consider a set in the Portuguese’s favour as well as at least one tiebreak, with one played in each of Borges’ matches so far.

TIP: NUNO BORGES TO WIN A SET (AND OVER 0.5 TIEBREAKS)
